Italy WNT’s night ended with a 0-3 defeat that does not alter the overall picture of the team. Despite the scoreline, there were elements that can be seen as steps forward. Next week in Fort Lauderdale, Soncin’s squad should be mentally sharper and ready to stay focused for the full 90 minutes.
ITALY WNT, WHAT REMAINS FROM ORLANDO
Italy fell 0-3, but for more than an hour they looked capable of responding after conceding an early goal – the result of a neat combination between Lavelle and Girma, finished by Moultrie at Giuliani’s near post. The Azzurre created a clear chance that Linari failed to convert, then stayed alert and tried to capitalize on USA’s mistakes, with Beccari forcing Girma into two crucial blocks. At the other end, Giuliani dealt well with the pressure and, early in the second half, kept Italy in the game. Cambiaghi tested Dickey, but that proved to be Italy’s final opportunity
WHAT CHANGED THE NIGHT
Italy eventually ran out of energy after spending much of the match defending against USA’s relentless attacks and trying to bridge the athletic gap that still exists. Boattin and Cantore nonetheless raised their level, even if the match did not swing in Italy’s favor. The game plan had been carefully prepared, but once substitutions were made, the new players struggled to catch the rhythm and were punished by Hayes’ side. Macario’s brace sealed the win for the USWNT, though her second goal might have been ruled out for a marginal offside
LOOKING AHEAD TO FORT LAUDERDALE
For the second friendly, Italy WNT can build on the courage shown in the first half and the defensive concentration maintained for over an hour. By refining the details, they can take another step toward matching the pace and precision of their opponents, who move the ball quickly and reach the penalty area with few passes. The attack must become more clinical, with greater support from the wings to generate chances and supply the forwards. It will be another demanding night, but the most important progress Italy can make is sustaining their rhythm until the final whistle
